Do the Right Thing With Purdue Pharma Funds

The Purdue Pharma bankruptcy has been approved, and billions in funds will be distributed across the United States. As we move forward from the crash scene and the wreckage of Purdue Pharma, several thoughts come to mind.
First, all levels of government (federal, state, and local) must segregate the billions of "Purdue/Sackler blood money" from other funds, including other opioid settlement funds. At the federal level, Congress must take action to ensure that the more than $200 million in funds flowing to the federal government from the bankruptcy plan are dedicated to initiatives that support the families most impacted by the Sackler family's actions. If Congress does not act to protect these funds, they will go into the general federal treasury to be spent across the federal budget for any purpose.
Purdue Pharma Funds: Why Affected Families Should Have a Voice
The Purdue/Sackler blood money is different! These funds are most connected to the origins of the epidemic, the blast site, comparable to the Trinity Site of 1945. They are most connected to the laying of the first of many land mines that we have been stepping on for the last thirty years. They are also the most connected to more than a quarter century of our history and lives, during which the natural order has been completely turned upside down. We are now living in a time where many have lost their spouse, children have been orphaned, where grandparents now raise their grandchildren while all are trying to deal with their own trauma, where sisters and brothers raise their nieces and nephews, where folks raise money to pay for the funerals of others, and where the impacted families are further traumatized and disrespected by the Sackler family!
Second, all government decisions about how to distribute the Purdue/Sackler blood money should be reviewed and approved by affected family members before any government spends a penny! Governments should appoint family panels and hold public meetings to discuss the plans for spending these funds.
Finally, the Purdue/Sackler blood money should be entirely dedicated to supporting the families who have been left to deal with their own trauma and that of their other family members, especially their grandchildren! The government at all levels should consider creating a pool to compensate families for their losses directly!
If governments try to give you reasons as to why they cannot do this, you should understand that what they are saying is they do not want to do it! They do not want to do the right thing!
It can be done!
